What braces are and how they work
Braces are small pieces bonded to the teeth with an archwire running through them. As the wire returns to its shape, it gradually moves the teeth into the position we have planned. It is classic orthodontics, but with materials and techniques that make it more comfortable and more precise today.
They come in metal and in tooth-coloured ceramic. We explain the differences at the first appointment, because not every case calls for the same thing.
The MFC prescription
Each bracket carries built-in information (the prescription) that determines how each tooth is tipped and rotated at the end of treatment. Dr Manuel Fernández Cano has developed his own prescription, the MFC prescription, made by American Orthodontics, the result of years of treated cases and of his work teaching biomechanics.
In addition, when the case calls for it, we individualise the prescription tooth by tooth on the 3D study: not every mouth needs the same angles.
Braces or aligners
Some cases are better solved with braces: major root movements, very rotated or impacted teeth, closing large spaces or some orthognathic surgery cases. Others do perfectly well with aligners. And many combine both: a short phase with braces and the rest with aligners, for example.
We work with both techniques, so the decision depends only on your case and your preferences, not on what we have available.
What treatment is like
We start with the 3D study: photos, intraoral scan and, when it adds something, a CBCT to see roots, bone and joint. We fit the braces in a single session and see you every 4-6 weeks to change wires and adjust. Most treatments last between 12 and 24 months, and at the end we fit retainers to keep the result.
Throughout the process we look after function, not just aesthetics: the teeth, their supporting bone, the temporomandibular joint and the muscles.
Caring for your braces
Brush after every meal, with a normal toothbrush and interdental brushes, and be careful with very hard or sticky foods, which can knock a bracket off. If one comes off, don't worry: call us and we will book you in to refit it. All our care tips for patients with braces.
