First appointment and quote
What is the first appointment like?
We examine you, take photos and an intraoral scan, explain your treatment options calmly and give you your quote, with no obligation.
How much does the first appointment cost?
It is an assessment appointment with examination, photos and a scan, and it has a fee that we tell you when you book. The quote you take away is personalised and with no obligation.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost in Málaga?
Every case is different: it depends on the technique, the complexity and the duration. At the first assessment appointment you receive a personalised quote, with aligners or with braces.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No. You can book directly. If you already have a dentist, we work in coordination with them for any other treatment.
Do you do the CBCT and the scan at the clinic?
Yes. Clínica Áncora has a CBCT, an intraoral scanner and a laser on site, so you don't have to go to any other centre.
Clear aligners
Clear aligners or braces?
It depends on the case and on your priorities. We work with both and, when it helps, we combine them.
Do you offer Invisalign?
Yes, although we also work with clear aligners that we design and make ourselves, planned on the 3D study of your case. We explain the differences at the first appointment.
How many hours a day do the aligners need to be worn?
About 22 hours: all day and all night, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water and brush.
Do aligners work for difficult cases?
For most, yes. In the most complex cases we combine them with attachments, mini-screws or a phase with braces.
Braces
What is the MFC prescription?
Dr Manuel Fernández Cano's own bracket prescription, made by American Orthodontics: it defines the final position of each tooth and is individualised on the 3D study.
Are there ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces?
Yes, tooth-coloured. They are much less noticeable than metal ones; if you want nothing to show, consider clear aligners.
What do I do if a bracket comes off?
Call us and we will book you in to refit it. In the meantime, keep the bracket if it has come off completely and avoid hard foods.
Children and teenagers
At what age should a child see an orthodontist?
At around 6-7 years old, when the first permanent teeth come through; earlier if you notice a crossbite, mouth breathing or habits such as thumb sucking.
Is there an age limit for orthodontics?
No. We treat children, teenagers and adults; in adults it is more and more common, especially with aligners.
What is dentofacial orthopaedics?
Treatments that guide the growth of the jaws in children, with removable or fixed appliances, to correct crossbites, narrow palates or lower jaws that lag behind.
During and after treatment
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the complexity; most treatments last between 12 and 24 months, and some aligner cases less. With 3D planning we give you a realistic estimate from the start.
How often are the check-ups?
Every 4-6 weeks with braces and every 6-8 weeks with aligners.
What happens when orthodontic treatment ends?
We fit retainers, either fixed behind the teeth or removable for night-time, and check them periodically. Without retention, teeth tend to move over the years.
Why do you take a CBCT?
It is an X-ray in three dimensions that shows bone, teeth, airways and the temporomandibular joint. It lets us plan precisely and protect the tooth roots and the TMJ; we only request it when it adds something.
TMJ
Do you treat jaw pain and clicking?
Yes. We assess the temporomandibular joint with an examination and, when needed, with sections of the joint on the CBCT, and treat everything from a splint to orthodontics that looks after the joint.
